Do We Take Insurance for Couples & Family Therapy?
This is a common question that comes up during the scheduling process — and the answer can be complicated.

Yes, We Bill to In-Network Insurance
If we are in-network with your insurance plan, we will bill your sessions. However, we want you to be aware that couples and family therapy is rarely accepted by insurance, even when claims are submitted. That means any portion not covered — including up to the full session cost — is the client’s responsibility. If you wish to confirm your full mental health benefits as a couple or as a family, our billing department uses codes 90846 and 90847; We encourage you to contact member services with these codes to inquire about your eligibility.

What Insurance Typically Covers
When insurance companies say they cover couples and family therapy, they’re usually referring to this narrow scenario:
-
One partner or patient has an official mental health diagnosis (the “identified patient”).
-
The sessions focus solely on treating that person’s condition.
-
The other partner or family member attends only to support the patient's treatment.
In this case, the focus is on one person’s medical necessity — not the relationship or familial relationship itself.
Why Most Couples & Families Seek Counseling
Most couples and families don’t come to therapy because of one person’s diagnosis. Instead, they’re looking for support with:
-
Communication and emotional connection
-
Trust and intimacy
-
Parenting challenges
-
Conflict resolution
-
Building stronger relationships
These reasons are valid and important — but they don’t meet insurance companies’ definition of “medical necessity.”

Why Transparency Matters
Some therapy practices avoid this issue by not billing insurance at all. While we do bill in-network insurance for couples and family counseling, we feel it’s important to set clear expectations: coverage is uncommon.
It’s also important to know: if a mental health diagnosis is submitted to insurance, that diagnosis becomes part of the patient’s permanent medical record. This can have future implications when applying for life insurance, long-term care insurance, military service, law enforcement, firefighting, or pilot licenses.

Our Rates
Our couples therapy sessions range from $175 to $225, reflecting the advanced training and expertise our team brings to relationship work.
